Best picnic spots in Gauteng
Winter is around the corner. So what better way to enjoy the summer leftovers as it shifts to autumn than a picnic in a park? Taking advantage of the last couple of hot days, we went exploring to seek the best picnic spots in Gauteng. Here is what we came up with …
This isn’t quite like your usual blanket on the ground picnic experience but rather very opulent. A game drive vehicle will transport you to the picnic area where you can expect picnic baskets laid out beneath ancient bush willows at the Cradle of Humankind.
Visitors can order champagne and indulge in a three-course picnic menu unlike any you have tried before. Think along the lines of a slow roasted leg of lamb with spiced potatoes, salad and a panna cotta for dessert. This is a small example of what you can expect when you visit this destination.
Forget the basket, at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens your picnic is served in reusable green bags. Visitors can choose from a selection of salads and sandwiches and larger groups should book in advance and the restaurant will put together a tailor-made picnic. You can even rent a picnic blanket for the day if you forgot yours.
Spend the day in the stunning botanical gardens with the smell of freshly mown lawns and flowers. Feel the last balmy rays of the sunshine soaking into your skin and bask in the breathtaking landscapes of Cape Town.
The Cape Winelands is a famous picnic destination, attracting tourists from around the globe. At Eight to Go at the Spier farm you can choose between a gourmet, vegetarian, gluten-free or kids’ picnic, all filled with delightful goodies.
Explore the vineyards and sample world-class wines. Be sure to pop in at the Deli and buy a delicious souvenir. You can also put your own picnic basket together at the deli with a selection of cold meats, pates and so more.
Fishing is every picnic’s best friend. In Kromdraai, Krugersdorp, you will find a fishing paradise. Gather your family and friends and find a shady spot beside the river. There is a safe place where children can swim while parents take a stab at fishing.
Some of the fish found in this dam includes Bass, Carp, Bream, Barble and Trout. All fish must be released with the exception of Trout. You will also find a fully equipped tackle shop on the premises. If you’d like, you can arrange with management to buy some of their trout pate and smoked salmon trout.
Spend your weekend than with the mouth-watering aroma of sizzling Trout on coals and the sound of laughing children splashing in the water. Can you think of anything better? We can’t.
