This 332 000 hectare Park was listed as South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in December 1999 and contains three major lake systems, eight interlinking ecosystems, 526 bird species and 700 year old fishing traditions. Go Bird watching

With over 400 bird species found in the area, this park is a huge attraction to bird watchers all around. While there are birds throughout the year, we would suggest that you visit sometime in late summer as that is when the birds, especially seabirds, are at their most abundant. There are fantastic bird watching trails near the town of St.Lucia.

Go on a once-in-a-lifetime boat trip on Lake St Lucia

South Africa’s largest body of fresh water is home to over 1 200 crocodiles and 800 hippopotami making a ride through this lake a truly thrilling experience. You can charter one of three daily 2 hour boat cruises where you will be able to see the hippos lounging in the sun and perhaps you are lucky enough to witness a crocodile catch its prey.

Visit the nearby Hluhluwe Game Reserve

Located a mere 2 hours’ drive from the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi safari park offers fantastic game viewing of the Big Five. Go on a safari and take pictures of not only the Big 5 but of a variety of over 90 species of mammals as well. You can go on a day trip to the reserve or spend a night at a game lodge. The uMkhuze Game Reserve is also quite close and another fantastic place to witness Africa’s finest animals in their natural habitat.

The nearby Kosi Bay is known as one of the world’s premier fly-fishing destinations. Whether you are an expert of novice fisherman, you will find this to be a stellar location in which to throw your line.
