Tribute to bus drivers

“Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well” – Voltaire

I get up at early hours and at times drive through the night to get you to where you need to be safely. Driving a bus isn’t an easy thing. Those are big vehicles which I must manoeuvre on busy roads. During those hours I have your lives in my hands. If something happens, I have blood on my hands. Yes, it is not the easiest thing to drive a bus.

I have people shouting at me, complaining, and people thanking me but not too often though. Every once in a while I get a smile which makes me feel like my job is worth it afterwards. Maybe I am doing a good job.

Although the bus is filled with people, my bus is the only company I have really. With all the cheerful chatting and noise, all I hear is the grumbling of my bus. That being said, my loyal bus sometimes breaks down since it has to work twice as hard as me. So, please be patient and try to understand. All I can do is wait with you for the mechanic to arrive.

I love being on the road. I get to see the country, all the way from Cape Town to Durban, from Zambia to Zimbabwe. It turns into a sort of adventure. Every time I park my bus and I watch people disembark I feel proud, another load of people who have arrived safely and on time.

I would like to thank you for being a passenger on my bus. For placing your trust in me to get you to where you need to be. For providing me with a job and putting food on my table. My wife and kids thank you to.

“Some years ago there was a study to discover the most stressful occupation. It turned out not to be the head of a large business, football manager or prime minister, but rather: bus driver.” – Jonathan Sacks.

We, here at Greyhound, would like to express our gratitude to all bus drivers not only driving Greyhound busses but school busses and those of other companies as well. Without you, Greyhound would not exist.
